MENDOZA: NEW MEETING OF THE NETWORK OF RURAL, INDIGENOUS, AND JUDICIAL WOMEN FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE 31/5/2024

The city of Mendoza was the setting for another step along the path of forming the Network of Rural Women, Indigenous Peoples, and Judicial Representatives for Climate Justice. Seventy representatives from different organizations were received at the Judicial Criminal Center by authorities and experts. Their voices were heard regarding the challenges they face in terms of access to water, land tenure where they work, and how climate change affects the survival of agricultural activity.

The hosts were represented by the judges of the Supreme Court of Mendoza, María Teresa Day and Alejandro Gullé, who is also the president of the Council of Prosecutors, Public Defenders, and General Advisors of the Argentine Republic.

The dialogues were enriched by presentations from Marcela Andino, Advisor to the General Superintendent of Irrigation (DGI); Valentina Erice from the Institute of the School of Legal and Social Sciences of the University of Mendoza (IEDS); Alejandra Orbelli, Judge of the Court of Appeals in Civil, Commercial, Mining, Peace, and Tax Matters; Adriana Carrión, Vice President of the Association of Agricultural Engineers of Mendoza; and Verónica Guevara Sisti, Justice of the Peace and Contraventional Judge for Palmira-San Martín.

Likewise, the meeting was attended by Lorena Chara, Director of the French Development Agency in Argentina, which sponsored the activity that is part of the Euroclima+ programs. The network is supported by the Association of Women Judges of Argentina (AMJA), the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA), the National Institute of Family, Peasant and Indigenous Agriculture (INAFCI), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the French Embassy in Argentina, the Rural Women’s Association of Argentina (MRA), and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).
