POPANC - Meeting in Misiones to Popularize Non-Conventional Food Plants 8/6/2024
The Foro del Sur Foundation gathered representatives of family farming in the city of Aristóbulo del Valle, in the province of Misiones, to provide them with greater knowledge about the possible uses of Non-Conventional Food Plants (PANC).
These plants, commonly referred to as "weeds," are foods of great nutritional, cultural, and socioeconomic value. Recognizing PANC species and disseminating information on their uses and methods of preparation not only contributes to diversifying the diet of those engaged in subsistence farming, especially women, who are normally the guardians of traditional uses of native species, but also, at the other extreme of the chain, PANC can supply a supplementary income through their commercialization. Additionally, they can help agro ecosystems manage the challenges posed by Climate Change.
The training session was led by Nuno Madeira, a researcher for EMBRAPA - Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária. Dr. Madeira, who holds a PhD in Phytotechnics/Horticulture, coordinates EMBRAPA's Research and Development work on the No-Till Vegetable System (SPDH) and is one of the most prominent Latin American specialists in this field.
