POPANC - MEETING IN CORRIENTES TO POPULARIZE NON CONVENTIONAL FOOD PLANTS 9/6/2024
The training session on Non-Conventional Food Plants (PANC) continued in the city of Ituzaingó in the province of Corrientes. It was an opportunity for participants to discover the properties of these plants as sources of great nutritional value.
On this occasion, many of those present shared their testimonies about how these plants are part of the memory and culture of many indigenous communities, but they acknowledged that, unfortunately, they have fallen into disuse due to market pressures. They took the opportunity to revive recipes from their ancestors and exchange possible uses.
The Brazilian specialist from EMBRAPA (Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuaria), Nuno Madeira, was able to discover several PANC species not only in the center of the city of Ituzaingó but also on Apipé Island (Paraná River), which surprised the participants.
PANC represents an important alternative for the food autonomy of local communities, and their resilience allows them to withstand the effects of climate change and avoid dependence on external inputs such as agrochemicals.
