Mexican Muralism 1/8/2011 al 3/10/2011

In August 2011, the professor Miguel Angel Muñoz held a course on Mexican muralism. The goal was to address the artistic renewal in Latin America in the 1920s and its relationship with the European avant-gardes. The Mexican Revolution, as the background of the origin and development of Mexican Muralism, was subject of study. Mr. Muñoz described how muralism is included in the culture of post-revolutionary Mexico and, specifically, in the educational program of José Vasconcelos. In a very rich and complex relationship with the different post-revolutionary governments, Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros produce their works. A special mention required the phenoenon of muralism outside of Mexico: in the United States and in Argentina as well.

The course was enrolled in the Cycle "The first Latin American avant-gardes" that the Foro del Sur Foundation set out to disseminate and whose main themes were: Mexican muralism; Brazilian modernism; Uruguayan painters: Figari, Barradas, Torres García. The proposal was to highlight the importance of Mexican, Brazilian and Uruguayan artists in the processes of artistic renewal in Latin America in the 1920s and 1930s. The relationships of these artists with their European referents: avant-garde or a "return to order"?
