COFFEE WITH IDEAS - CARLOS MALAMUD 28/9/2022
The Foro del Sur Foundation hosted a talk by historian Carlos Malamud on the role of Latin America and Europe in addressing new global challenges.
Carlos Malamud is Professor of Latin American History at the Spanish National University of Distance Education (UNED) and Senior Analyst for Latin America at the Elcano Royal Institute for International and Strategic Studies. He has written and published numerous books on Latin American history, including Populismos latinoamericanos (2010) and Historia de América (2010). He currently combines his work as a historian with that of a political and international relations analyst specializing in Latin America. He is responsible for the Latin America section of Revista de Libros. Since 2014, he has been a corresponding member in Spain of Argentina’s National Academy of History.
Some of the historian’s reflections:
“Putin is betting on restricting gas and oil supplies to Europe. The recent triple sabotage of the gas pipelines raises the prospect of an energy war, including cyberattacks on Europe’s energy network.”
“The outcome of the midterm elections in the United States will determine Trump’s chances of running for re-election.”
“Latin America’s fragmented nature, combined with long-standing tendencies, has led to its almost complete irrelevance on the international stage.”
“Beyond the rhetoric and the condemnation of the invasion of Ukraine, the fact is that no Latin American country has joined the sanctions against Russia.”
“There is a persistent claim that Latin America is shifting to the left, experiencing a new pink tide. But what we are seeing is a clear tendency among voters to punish incumbent governments. Of the last fourteen elections held in Latin America, the incumbent party won only one.”
