Digital Seminar: China's Relations with Latin America 3/2/2022

The Regional Coordinator for Economic and Social Research (CRIES), Foro del Sur, and the Center for Latin American & Latino Studies (CLALS) presented the results and developments of the joint project between CRIES and CLALS.

Participants:
Luiza Duarte is a journalist and a Global Fellow at the Brazil Institute, Wilson Center. Duarte has been active in the broadcast media industry since 2007. Before moving to New York to work as the US correspondent for CNN Brasil, she lived in Hong Kong as the Asia correspondent for GloboNews, of Grupo Globo, the largest commercial TV network in South America. She earned a Master’s Degree in Media Studies from the Panthéon-Assas University, French Press Institute, and she obtained her PhD in Political Science at Sorbonne Nouvelle University – Institute.

Eric Hershberg is director of the Center for Latin American and Latino Studies and a professor of government at American University. From 2007-2009 he was President of the Latin American Studies Association while serving as professor of political science and director of Latin American Studies at Simon Fraser University, in Vancouver, Canada. From 1990-2006 he worked as a program director at the Social Science Research Council in New York City. He received his Ph.D from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and has taught at New York University, Southern Illinois University, Columbia, Princeton and the New School. His research has focused primarily on the comparative politics of Latin America, and on the political economy of development in the region. Most recently, Hershberg has conducted studies of community integration of Central American migrants to various parts of the United States. He has served as a consultant to numerous development and educational agencies, including the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the World Bank, the Chilean Ministry of the Economy, and the Swedish International Development Agency, and is a member of numerous editorial boards. He speaks frequently with major media outlets about public affairs in Latin America and issues affecting Latino communities in the United States.

Marlise Ilhesca is a journalist specialised in international relations and has worked for different media such as Folha de São Paulo, Jornal do Brasil, O Público, Radio Suiza International, BBC, TV Manchete, TV Educativa and Radiobrás. She was posted in Paris, London, Geneva and Caracas, where she chaired the Foreign Press Association. She is a member of the committee of experts of the French Chirac and Culture et Diversité Foundations for the selection of the prize awarded to cultural initiatives in international conflict zones. She is a member of the Latin American Committee of Open Democracy.

José María Llados, Foro del Sur Foundation advisor, is a lawyer and holds a master’s degree in International Relations. He has been Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Buenos Aires. He has been Executive Director of the Argentine Council for International Relations (CARI). In the public sector, he served as Secretary of Production for Defense and Planning, in both cases in the Ministry of Defense, and as Advisor to the Defense Committee of the National Chamber of Deputies. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Master's Degree in International Relations at the Universidad de Buenos Aires, the Board of Directors of the Juventus Lírica Foundation and the Academic Committee of CRIES (Regional Coordinator for Economic and Social Research.

Gino  Pauselli is a candidate for a PhD in International Relations at the University of Pennsylvania. His research areas focus on human rights, development aid and international borders using mainly quantitative methods. His work has been published in renowned scientific journals among the academic community. He is also a guest professor at the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella and the Universidad Nacional de San Martín. He has worked at the Argentine Council for International Relations and the Mercosur Institute for Public Policies on Human Rights.

Cynthia Sanborn is Vice Rector of Research at the Universidad del Pacífico and full professor of the Political and Social Sciences Department. She holds a PhD and MA in Government from Harvard University and a BA in Political Science from the University of Chicago. She has served as director of the Centro de Investigación de la Universidad del Pacífico (CIUP) and Department Head of the Social and Political Sciences. She is Board President of the Consorcio de Investigación Económica Social (CIES) and member of the Advisory Board of the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (DRCLAS) at Harvard University. She is also a founding member of Grupo Sofia: professional women in social sciences

Andrés Serbin is the President of the Regional Coordinator of Economic and Social Research (CRIES), President of the Asia and the Americas Section of LASA and President Emeritus of the Venezuelan Institute of Economic and Social Research (INVESP). Director and founder of the trilingual academic journal "Pensamiento Propio" and author of numerous books on International Relations such as Eurasia and Latin America in a Multipolar World. He is a columnist for the newspapers Perfil, Clarín and La Nación in Argentina, for Latinoamérica 21, for the blogs of the Valdai Club and the Aula Blog of CLALS (American University).
