COFEE WITH IDEAS - JUAN GABRIEL TOKATLIAN Y BERNABÉ MALACALZA 25/10/2022
The Foro del Sur Foundation hosted a meeting between trade unionists, businessmen, diplomats, and academics and renowned international relations researchers and specialists Juan Gabriel Tokatlian and Bernabé Malacalza. The starting point of the discussion was the paper they prepared for the Brazilian Centre for International Relations entitled "Brazil-Argentina, between Disintegration and Decoupling?"
In Juan Tokatlian’s words, it is disturbingly clear that in recent times there has been a gradual deterioration of the historical friendship between Argentina and Brazil, which is reflected in two specific processes: regional disintegration and bilateral decoupling. "To assert that the problems of integration can be solved with more integration is a very poor way of approaching this issue. It is necessary to find out why we are disintegrating and what is keeping us apart".
According to Bernabé Malacalza, "An important aspect to analyse about the relationship between Argentina and Brazil is their strategic dialogue and coordination vis-à-vis the great powers - mainly the United States and China - in the United Nations with regard to the nuclear question and the space issue".
The specialist recalled that since 2011 the decoupling process has been gaining ground between Argentina and Brazil. "The problems that keep us apart are escalating and intensifying. A fair number of matters are still entrenched and unresolved".
"The current international context, which is pessimistic, restrictive, troubled and marked by the realignment of socio-political conflicts, indicates that Brazil is fundamental for Argentina and vice versa. Going forward, we need to rebuild a narrative based on production", the specialist warned.
