ARCHIVOS DEL PRESENTE MAGAZINE N°66: "GOODBYE TO DEMOCRACY?"
The Foro del Sur Foundation presented a new edition of the magazine Archives of the Present, in which international specialists reflect on the new scenarios of the democratic system in the world, diplomatic and commercial links between the world's top powers, and on cultural experiences and movements politicians who transcend borders such as Bienalsur and "Ni una menos”.
Directed by Aníbal Jozami, the magazine includes several articles that seek to generate a debate about the Latin American and international reality. This issue has as its main theme the problem of democracy and the discussion about its constituent elements in relation to the current reality. Francesc Badía i Dalmases, Claudio Couto, Juan Tokatlian, Norma Morandini and Graciela Römer write on this matter.
The international news section includes an article entitled “Trump and Xi Jinping: Similar but different”, by UNTREF researcher and professor Sergio Cesarín, and discusses the link and profile of the presidents of the two world powers. In addition, the articles "The importance of the Paris agreement and climate action", by Enrique Maurtua Konstantinidis and "Why alliances fade?" by Nicolás Comini can be found as well.
In the reviews section, it offers a “On Populism” approach based on the work of José Paradiso, and the advancement of feminist claims worked on in the interview done to Cecilia Palmeiro by Carlos Acebal about the “Ni Una Menos: From the collective shout to the global tide”. There is also an art and culture section, where Diana Wechsler explains what Bienalsur -International Biennial of Contemporary Art of South America- consists on: a UNTREF project that crosses borders of art and nations and tries to create cultural articulations that contribute to regional integration.
In the editorial feature, Anibal Jozami points out that “capitalism could not prevent the creation of large portions of poverty and marginalization. The lack of interest in politics does not bring any real solutions to these communities, and the persistence of the need for social assistance means that the political independence of those who integrate these sectors is alienated”.
Jozami also adds: “In parallel to all this, new economic superpowers escape the rules of the democratic game, since they have power features that usually surpass those coming from the game of democracy. To which we must add the growth of the informal economy sectors that, logically, are left out of the institutions' game”.
Archivos del Presente also includes a special selection of the articles of the prestigious Foreign Policy: “Women vs. the machine”, by Erika Hayasaki; "The rapist's escape: marriage," by Ruby Mellen; "Can women really revolutionize politics with protests?", by Masih Alinejad and Krystyna Kacpura; and "Behold, looking towards 2050", by Paul Taylor.
